Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti: Mature Themes

6.3

This is way too weird, more than good. The previous album was better, but this is half comical, half psychedelic. Some of the tracks stand out apart from the overall sound of the album. It's very 60's, like The Turtles, or The Strawberry Alarm Clock. Sounds to me that's what Mature Themes is heavily influenced by. But revivalists are never as great as the pioneers of any musical genre. I give Ariel Pink credit for nailing the production value as if this actually was engineered in the 60's, but for quality of songwriting material, I think it falls flat.

  1. This record doesn't sound anything like the production of the 60's. There are tones of the 60's like cheap organ and lightly fuzzed guitar, but the production is decidedly modern and separated.
