Atoms for Peace: Amok

8.7

This is an interesting turn for Thom Yorke, as it still sounds like something Radiohead would put out. Leaning heavier on the techno side more so than Radiohead, Atoms for Peace have made their debut an impressive one. The expected gloomy melodies are there, but hovering over electronic drum loops and psychedelic sound effects. There are some really interesting rhythm patterns, funky rhythms, probably having more to do with the other band members influence, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers in particular. Some of it reminds me of Yorke's solo album but not as atonal or as dark. Thom Yorke might need other musicians to cheer up his shadowy vision, just the way Radiohead is the sum of all its parts, Atoms for Peace is a splendid new project worth investigating.
