Neil Young's second album of the year 2012. This is a trip back to the old school sounds of Crazy Horse, grungy and raw. But the material is too loose. It's not a focused album. Perhaps he tried to mix hippie psychedelia with grunge and came up short. The words are not up to par for Young, nor are the songs as memorable as his classics. Is Neil Young churning out these records at the twilight of his career too quick? Are they reasons to tour like a new Rolling Stones album? Maybe, but he is still capable of rocking out with the best of them. This is one of those albums, if you're a fan of that Crazy Horse sound, you will enjoy it. If you're a critical Young fan that's expecting a Harvest or a Zuma or After the Goldrush, skip it.

ReplyDeleteI'd be happy to hear an entire concert of Neil just jamming "Driftin Back"-- the gentle intro takes us to a cantina in the desert, and once there we mount the Horse and fly up to the sun
