Montreal Indie Mavericks Debbie Christ Topple Our Collective Inhibitions with Unbridled Theatricality and Flair on Unflinching Debut Album Tower

No one would ever mistake singer-songwriter/guitarist Clara O'Page as the shy type. As the mastermind and frontwoman behind the genre-bending Montreal mavericks Debbie Christ, O'Page rifles through an array of musical styles, topics, moods and perspectives like a stage actor going through costume changes. Now, with their thrilling full-length debut Tower, O'Page and her bandmates stand poised to topple our collective inhibitions around shame, sexuality, and trauma with a theatricality and fashion sense that hits hard while also making the subject matter more palatable.

"I'm the youngest of six," O'Page explains, "so I was encouraged to be funny and outgoing — I love to be goofy and make people laugh — but vulnerability was foreign to me. I grew up in an Evangelical household where you just don't talk about the icky bits. You save those for God. On top of that, my dad's side is English. It's a very repressed cultural mindset. So, where I'm typically a clown day to day, music is my place where I can be more serious. Getting into punk music, I gradually got more comfortable disclosing my feelings. I learned that it can be revolutionary just to simply say what you're actually feeling. That's very profound for someone like me. Like I'm not someone who cries very easily, so music is how I do my crying. And it evolved to the point where there's now a definite shock-value element."

The video for the single "Lust!" is the ultimate case in point. Suffice it to say you'd be hard-pressed to find another example of sexual violence portrayed with such stylishness and verve. "Stylish" isn't a word we typically associate with assault, but Debbie Christ and director Aaron Nadal have somehow managed to pull-off the impossible in their portrayal of physical violation as a metaphor for addiction.

"I'm not trying to piss people off," she adds with a laugh, "but I feel like people need to be shaken up. There are too many ways that we're all just so... bound-up. And it would benefit us all to just be able to break free and have room to breathe. My favorite photographer, for example, is Robert Mapplethorpe. I'm really inspired by his ability to make people question what art is versus what's just vulgar and over-the-top. And I like dwelling in that place where you're kind of squirming in your uncertainty. If you do that with a conscience — if you actually have a point — I feel like that can be very useful. Especially if the music underneath really grabs you. And that's where all the different styles come in. We're trying!"

An explosive mix of surf, garage, psychedelia, shoegaze, glam, punk, folk, and spoken-word, Tower jolts the "confessional music" stereotype into an all-new, decidedly assertive artform, even as O'Page's songs reveal softness and unguarded disclosure as a superpower. At times, Tower echoes the stylish minimalism of The Velvet Underground. At other times, Debbie Christ channels an avant-glam sensibility that would've made the likes of David Bowie and The New York Dolls proud. Elsewhere, serrating bursts of naked emotion split the difference between Patti Smith, PJ Harvey and contemporary art-pop experimentalists like Sasami.

Indeed, Tower allows us to imagine what it would be like if pop mavens like, say, Debbie Harry or Pat Benatar had been born a generation later and fronted the Canadian folk-punk trio And The Kids. Or, for instance, if Angel Olsen had been born a generation earlier and joined Alice Cooper at the height of their druggy eccentrism.

Speaking in a prayer-like cadence at the beginning of Tower, we hear O'Page incanting the words “Elixir of life, I ask for light... I am given sound”.

For O'Page, one form of expression can always swap places with another. "For me," she explains, "the act of making music is more like mixed media. My journals are very tactile, and I see slow fashion almost as like a new punk movement. I almost can't help but see all of these things as going hand in hand — melodies, phrases, visuals, and fabric are always sloshing around in my head. When people listen to the album, that's the sense I want them to get."

Thomas Priest "Wake Up Call" is a rocker!

This is one of the hottest EP's to drop all year! Thomas Priest is a singer/songwriter from New York with songs you won't forget!

'Pop Rock' is led by young artists today like Thomas Priest. The songs are upbeat, catchy melodies with a smart lyrical charm. The first three songs are full throttle rockers. "Safe Tonight" features awesome chorus harmonies with Lindsay Mac, easily one of the best tracks I've heard all year. "Ignorance" is more experimental and synth-ambient, changing the course of the EP's direction to a more mellow tone. "What Do We Do" is the greatest Noel Gallagher song he wish he wrote! An epic closing ballad to a perfect EP.

"Wake Up Call" is indie rock waiting for the mainstream to drink its morning coffee. This is the jolt we need on the radio today. Priest has a soulful voice, warm in tone and emotionally resonant. His lyrics are very relatable and sincere. Some of the tunes sound like something The Strokes or Stereophonics would do, but more modern and sharper production. There is a fresh in-studio organic vibe, very well-recorded with high level quality and top notch musicians. Keep em coming Thomas!

Thomas Priest is a fast rising music star from East Northport, Long Island. On his 13th birthday, Thomas began jamming on the electric guitar and realized that he had a real passion for music, immersing himself in the art and quickly learning to play the acoustic and bass guitars as well. He began songwriting and playing live a few years later; his first performance being at his High School’s talent show when he was just 15. Over time, Thomas learned he also had a knack for singing and within a year of that first show the now competent and confident Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist began writing and recording his own songs in a studio. After completing two incredible tracks which immediately became the talk of his hometown, Thomas set his sights on making his dream to become a professional nationally touring musician come true.

Earlier this year, Thomas had the pleasure of recording his second EP in Nashville, TN with Rian Dawson of All Time Low as Producer. The fruits of their labor can be heard on this brand new EP entitled "Wake Up Call", which is now available everywhere. Thomas Priest isn't looking back, he’s charging forward. No prayers needed; he’s got the drive, determination and most of all the exceptional talent required to truly succeed. Listen online and decide for yourself. You’ll want to catch him performing LIVE in a city near you very soon!

Alt/Indie-Pop Recording Artist Vaeda Black To Perform at National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) 2019 - Saturday, January 26th

Following her latest video release “Suicide Love” being hailed as “...thought-provoking and provocative” (The Daily Listening) and a “captivating vocal performance” (Wonky Sensitive) and much more - Singer/Songwriter Vaeda Black is getting ready to pack her bags and head West for a performance at the 2019 NAMM Show on Saturday, January 26th at 4:00PM on the NAMM Pioneer Pro Audio Arena Plaza Stage!

On her excitement for the show, Black says “I’m looking forward to performing in front of a crowd of complete strangers! I love getting feedback from new listeners”. Along with this being her first trip to California, she’s grateful to her bandmates for pushing her to continually get her music out there. “My music director/pianist James works in the industry and got me to apply for the spot. I’m so grateful for everything he and my band do for me. The guys are all psyched to be at NAMM” she says with a laugh “Everyone should come with an open mind and expect a ton of rhythmic flailing on my part (if you don’t understand what I mean by that, you probably haven’t seen me perform. Let’s just say I can’t dance)”.

The performance will feature Black on vocals along with her band which includes James Sajeva (Music Director/Keys), Eddie Matthews (Bass), and Andrew Harts (Drums) - all seasoned pros straight from the NYC music scene.

With the release of her latest single, “Suicide Love,” Vaeda Black takes the juxtaposition of two seemingly opposite topics and weaves them together to create a dark love story that illustrates the idea of being vulnerable and “showing yourself to another person and letting them love you.”

She says, “It actually started with a text message from my ex-boyfriend while we were together probably about a year ago. I don’t remember exactly what we were talking about, but he wrote ‘that’s called suicide, love.’ Something about those two words next to each other really struck me; they’re so different. I kept thinking it would be such an interesting way to express love, passion and deep wanting, so I wrote a song around it.” The combination of those two distinct feelings gives the song a truly unique sound and style.

Despite the title, and it’s darker atmosphere, Black says “it’s really a love song. Being vulnerable is hard for a lot of people, but I want this song to represent the good things that come from showing yourself to another person and letting them love you.” In an age where many artists stick to upbeat, pop love tunes, Black isn’t afraid to shake up stereotypes and create a sound distinctly her own, something “Suicide Love” showcases perfectly. With her blend of indie, alternative, and a little soul, listening to her songs comes as a refreshing break from some of the more mainstream styles.

LUV DOT GOV Release First Single “Luv Me Blue” Off Forthcoming Debut LP

As they get ready to unleash their DEBUT LP “At Least We’ve Got This Madness” NYC/U.K. based rockers LUV DOT GOV are giving fans a taste of what’s to come as they’ve just released their first Single “Luv Me Blue”! And with their upcoming RECORD RELEASE at NYC’s The Local Friday, May 18th at 6PM along with a string of upcoming U.K. dates this Summer, they’ll have plenty chances to check out this young blooded power-pop outfit that’s tearing up stages from Brooklyn to Edinburgh! (Upcoming U.K. Dates Below)

Luv Dot Gov, the brainchild of Matthew Pop (vocals/guitar) and Stevie Seaweeds (drums/vocals), was born on a rooftop in Brooklyn in the summer 2016 as a response to dark, trying times — both personally and politically. The band would quickly become a vehicle for some of the best emotionally honest power pop this side of the 90s. Thankfully, they were armed with the finest collection of tunes penned by Pop over the course of his decades-long career, marrying heartbroken but hopeful lyrics to sticky-sweet melodies — all set to precisely arranged, chunky down-tuned guitars.

By fall 2016, the fledgling Luv Dot Gov had recruited Sean Egan on bass, and had a few local gigs under their belts. However, stressed and depressed in a post-election US, Pop ran away to Scotland for a brief respite in November. It was here he linked up with Graeme Young, a producer and operator of Chamber Studio in Edinburgh. A plan was soon hatched to record Luv Dot Gov’s debut album abroad, taking advantage of Young’s top notch equipment, expertise and extensive network of first-class musicians. After another smattering of stateside and UK shows, Matt and Steve decamped to Scotland for the spring of 2017 to lay down tracks for the record. Here, isolated from the stressors of the States, the songs blossomed into intricate but accessible pop-rock anthems, equally suited for blasting out a car stereo or headphones-on introspection.

Upcoming Performances:

Upon Matt and Steve’s return to New York that summer, the band rounded out its roster by bringing in Brandon von Fehr (lead guitar) and Patrick Fischer (keyboard/synth). Now equipped to capture the record’s expansive arrangements live, the new five-piece lineup started honing their skills, sharpening their set into a muscular, airtight slice of indie rock. Soon thereafter, they began booking gigs at venues both trendy and historic (Pine Box Rock Shop, the Bitter End), winning over audiences with their lively stage presence and nostalgic yet forward-thinking sound.

Meanwhile, Young continued refining tracks across the pond, and the resulting album; the hooky and bittersweet “At Least We’ve Got This Madness,” is ready to make its debut on May 18th.

In honour of its release, the band will perform the album in its entirety at The Local in Queens, NY on Friday, May 18th but you can hear the first Single “Luv Me Blue” TODAY!
